Earned from real life experience.

Not grown in a laboratory. Not manufactored in a boardroom. Grown from the ground of a life that was tested, broken, and rebuilt."

There is a knowledge that no university can confer and no credential can replicate. It grows only in one place in the lived experience of a human being who has been on the wrong side of every system, every table, every decision, and came back anyway.

THE HUMAN VERDICT™ carries that knowledge onto a stage and places it in front of the people whose decisions shape whether other human beings live with dignity or without it. May this wisdom performance help to heal the hole in humanity.

courtroom line
That purpose never died; it waited. In the American century, August Wilson set out to put Black life on the permanent record decade by decade, insisting that ordinary lives carried the weight of history and deserved the dignity of the stage. Anna Deavere Smith took it further still walking into the aftermath of real civic crises, gathering the actual words of the people who lived them, and returning that testimony to the stage so a community could face itself in its own voice.

This is the inheritance THE HUMAN VERDICT™ is built upon. Real testimony. Real evidence. A community summoned to look at itself without flinching. The conviction that the stage is the most reliable civic technology we have  older than the courthouse, older than the ballot, and answerable to no one but the people in the room.

We did not invent this calling. We answered it.

And here is where the tradition is asked to move. Those who came before staged the testimony. Civic Theater™ convenes the verdict. The witnesses are real and local. The evidence belongs to the city being visited. And when the proceeding ends, the audience does not applaud and disperse they carry a judgment out the door and deliberate it for the rest of their lives.

I wrote it from the inside of every system this performance puts on trial."

Dear Reader,
This is not a story you were meant to watch from a distance. You were meant to weigh it.The testimony is finished. The evidence is on the record. Award-winning journalist. Lobbyist. Performer. Founder. Survivor of every room she names. Every system in here already passed its sentence on her, and on people who never got to speak. She has spent a lifetime on the wrong side of that ruling.
Now the ruling is yours.
Have you reached a verdict?
